The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
