Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
